Written Workplace Safety Programs

Who must create one?

In Nevada all employers who have 11 or more employees have to develop a written workplace safety program. Employers who manufacture explosives are also required to have a written workplace safety program even if they do not have 11 employees.

What is it?

A written workplace safety program is a management approach for identifying, evaluating, analyzing, and controlling workplace safety and health hazards.

When must I create it?

Programs should be developed before a company has more than 10 employees. If a company already has more than 10 employees and no written workplace safety program exists, you should begin developing one as soon as you can.

Where do I keep it?

The program must be available for employees to read. We recommend mentioning that the program exists and where to find it in the employee handbook. This allows updates to be made to the written workplace safety program without need for updating the entire handbook.

Why should I create one?

It a legal requirement to create a written workplace safety program. It can also help save a company money by reducing workers’ compensation costs through fewer injuries, reducing employee time away from work, and helping improve employee productivity and morale.
